Designers Create Capsule Collection of Voter-Inspired Merchandise, Host Exclusive Virtual Events and Employ Platforms to Drive Voter Registration and Turnout at the General Election

NEW YORK (September 3, 2020) – Launching today, Fashion Our Future 2020 will leverage the power of fashion to engage underrepresented communities in the political process. Initiated by Abrima Erwiah, co-founder of fashion label Studio 189, the campaign brings together fashion designers and the broader fashion industry to support voter registration and education, teaming up with Voto Latino to empower one million disenfranchised voters to make their voices heard at the General Election on November 3.

A designer-led initiative, Fashion Our Future 2020 will inspire new and first-time registrants to engage in the democratic process by offering access to exclusive merchandise drops, virtual programming and digital content. Campaign participants will use their collective platforms to help amplify voices, address issues of importance to their communities, and encourage voter education and participation.

“I love our country’s motto, ‘E pluribus unum’, out of many, one. That’s what I see when I look at the number of eligible voters in this country – I see the possibility of us all getting involved, and I imagine what we could do if we joined forces and worked together,” stated Erwiah. “Fashion can do more than sell clothes. It creates cultural moments that inspire movements, so let’s make celebrating our right to vote the biggest movement of 2020. We are standing on the shoulders of all the people who marched, fought, sacrificed and died for us to have this right to vote. I think about the power of all these collective voices and what we can do if we all come together and participate. Together, we can make a difference. We can make history.”

Virgil Abloh, the celebrated Off White and Louis Vuitton designer, has signed on as creative director of Fashion Our Future 2020. With a crew of likeminded designers and brands, Abloh will release custom merchandise timed to NYFW: The Shows, the central hub of live and virtual activity in New York during Fashion Week, taking place September 13-17, 2020. Through voter registration prompts at point of sale, the campaign will inspire customers to seize their democratic right while shopping limited-edition apparel and accessories from the culture-setting labels they love.

“Fashion has incredible power to inspire and incite meaningful change, and with buy-in from my fellow designers and the broader fashion community, we know we can turn the tide of American politics and ensure fair and equal representation at the poles,” stated Abloh.

“As designers we express ourselves via clothing and now we are using our collective platforms to effect change and bring awareness that the upcoming election will have long-lasting generational repercussions. I feel that our combined unity, creativity and political awareness might help change our current American political landscape,” commented Fashion Our Future 2020 participating designer, advisor, and founder of fashion industry advancement organization IN THE BLK, Victor Glemaud.

Through Studio 189 co-founder, Rosario Dawson, the campaign has harnessed the expertise of voter registration nonprofit, Voto Latino, which Dawson cofounded in 2004 with Maria Teresa Kumar. In partnership with Voto Latino, Fashion Our Future 2020 aims to register one million voters by National Voter Registration Day on September 22, then drive those one million strong to the polls.

As we approach the most critical election of our lifetimes – when the core principles of Democracy are at stake – Gen Z, Millennials, people of color, latinx, immigrants, and women will make up the vast majority of eligible voters in 2020. Their voices matter more than ever, and the weight of their collective impact starts with a single action: registering to vote,” stated Dawson.
